CNA Congratulates Candu Energy on Joint Venture Agreement with CNNC

OTTAWA (November 11, 2014) – The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) congratulates Candu Energy on a framework joint venture agreement with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) to build Advanced Fuel CANDU Reactor (AFCR) projects in China and pursue global opportunities.

“This agreement represents a new phase in Canada-China nuclear cooperation,” said Dr. John Barrett, CNA President and CEO. “It holds the promise of new jobs in Canada as well as an economic boost for Canadian nuclear engineering and supplier companies.”

The agreement followed a positive review of the AFCR by Chinese nuclear experts last week.

“CANDU technology offers many advantages including the ability to use recycled uranium as fuel, thus minimizing the amount of used fuel in long-term storage,” added Dr. Barrett.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang attended the signing ceremony on November 8 in Beijing, China, at the Great Hall of the People.
