High-Performance Canadian Uranium Sector Recognized by Nuclear Regulator

OTTAWA (May 1, 2014) – The Canadian nuclear industry applauded the top marks awarded to the country’s uranium fuel cycle and processing facilities today by Canada’s nuclear regulator.
“This report shows that Canadians can place their trust in Canada’s uranium mines and mills, its uranium processing facilities and its nuclear substance processing facilities,” said Dr. John Barrett, President of the Canadian Nuclear Association.
“The report shines a light on the industry’s strong focus on human safety and environmental protection.”
Today’s report from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission reviews industry performance in 14 safety and control areas. Among other things, the report concludes that:
- No worker, and no member of the public, received radiation doses above regulatory limits
- All environmental protection programs were effective
- All nuclear license holders complied with their license conditions.
The report also tracks industry performance in waste management, and emergency management and fire protection.
Canada is a leading world uranium producer, accounting for about 18% of the world’s primary production. Canadian uranium is used exclusively for the generation of electricity at nuclear power plants.
Canada’s uranium industry supports the jobs of about 15,000 people in Saskatchewan and is the leading industrial employer of aboriginal people in the province.
