SaskPower announces technology selection for first commercial nuclear reactor to be built in Saskatchewan

SaskPower announced today that it has chosen GE Hitachi to be the supplier for the first commercial nuclear reactor to be built in the province. The selection of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) was made after a four-year evaluation process.

The selection follows years of study and consultation, including a feasibility study released in April 2021, and the release of A Strategic Plan for the Development of Small Modular Reactors in March of this year. The strategic plan, released by Saskatchewan, Alberta, New Brunswick, and Ontario, lays out a plan for the use of SMRs as a fundamental tool in provincial efforts to transition to a low-carbon energy grid.

“This is an important milestone as Saskatchewan works towards a cleaner, more sustainable future,” said Don Morgan, Minister responsible for SaskPower. “Conducting an independent and comprehensive evaluation while also collaborating with the other provinces on the SMR Strategic Direction has been extremely valuable in reaching this important milestone to potentially bring nuclear power to Saskatchewan.”

The selection of the BWRX-300 by SaskPower follows the selection by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for the same reactor at its Darlington site, providing opportunities for synergies between the two projects. OPG is expected to apply for a construction license later this year.
