Statement from the Canadian Nuclear Association on Ontario’s 2025 Fall Economic Statement
The Canadian Nuclear Association welcomes Ontario’s 2025 Fall Economic Statement and its focus on building a competitive, self-reliant economy anchored in clean and reliable energy.
The province’s $1 billion investment through the Building Ontario Fund in Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project, along with early-stage planning for new large-scale nuclear facilities at the Bruce and Wesleyville sites, reflects a generational commitment to energy infrastructure. This positions nuclear power at the centre of Ontario’s strategy to meet rising electricity demand, supports regional development, and protects ratepayers by providing stable and predictable costs for decades.
Construction of the four small modular reactors at Darlington is expected to create up to 18,000 Canadian jobs and inject about $500 million annually into Ontario’s economy while delivering 1200 megawatts of clean power, enough to supply 1.2 million homes. Industry modeling suggests that Ontario’s broader nuclear refurbishment and expansion could contribute hundreds of billions of dollars to GDP and support tens of thousands more jobs over the long term.
The CNA supports Ontario’s call for continued federal alignment through investment tax credits and streamlined approvals. As outlined in CNA’s Energy Outlook (September 2025), a stable and coordinated policy environment can significantly accelerate project timelines and unlock billions in clean-energy investment.
Nuclear energy is already the foundation of Ontario’s economy, providing affordable and non-emitting power to homes and industries. The Fall Economic Statement’s $18 million investment to expand medical isotope production at McMaster University’s nuclear reactor, increasing capacity to 84 000 treatments per year, underscores nuclear’s broader value in advancing healthcare and innovation.
As Ontario charts its next chapter, the nuclear sector stands ready to build, with the skills, supply chain, and commitment needed to deliver prosperity for generations.
