Federal Cabinet shuffle: implications for the nuclear sector

July 26, 2023

Prime Minister Trudeau announced today changes to the Federal Cabinet, including the appointment of seven new Ministers. This move is aimed at consolidating the election Cabinet while reenergizing the Government’s standing as recent polls point to a decline of support for the Liberal Government. The shuffle also seeks to reaffirm the Government’s focus on the environment, economy and affordable housing.

For the Canadian nuclear industry, the core and supportive Ministers have remained in their posts:

  • Minister Wilkinson remains in place as Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The addition of Energy to his title officially recognizes the increased role that the federal government plays in setting energy policy
  • Minister Freeland remains at Finance Canada
  • Minister Guilbeault remains as Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada

The appointment of the following Ministers, who have been supportive of the Canadian nuclear industry, opens up additional opportunities for engagement:

  • Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, Official Languages
  • Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing , Infrastructure and Communities
  • Terry Beach, Minister of Citizens Services
  • Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada

The CNA will be reaching out to the new Cabinet Ministers as part of its federal relations efforts and will be monitoring for any additional staff and departmental changes that may follow.
