Nuclear Industry Welcomes Paid Internships in High-Demand Fields
OTTAWA (May 2, 2014) – The Canadian nuclear industry welcomes the Canadian government’s support for paid internships for post-secondary graduates.
“The announcement will enable the nuclear industry to increase its supply of highly qualified workers,” said Dr. John Barrett, President of the Canadian Nuclear Association.
“Employers will be able to provide young people with real-life work experience so that they can easily transition to the labour market.”
The federal government said today it will support paid internships to help young Canadians get the skills and experience they need to find jobs in high-demand fields such as science, technology, engineering and the skilled trades.
The nuclear industry currently employs 60,000 Canadians, directly and indirectly, many of whom are reaching retirement age.
Studies of the broader electricity sector suggest some 50 per cent of employees will leave their jobs in the next 10 years. Their departure will create valuable opportunities for the next generation.
