OTTAWA (December 18, 2018) – The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) today congratulates the Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation for being awarded $2.2 million to renovate and equip the Innovation Wing of the Saskatchewan Centre for Cyclotron Sciences (SCCS) at the University of Saskatchewan.

“The federal government’s funding will go towards nuclear technologies that will help detect and treat diseases and improve crop productivity,” said CNA President and CEO Dr. John Barrett. “This funding is recognition that nuclear technology has many applications that can improve the quality of life for people around the world while creating high-paying jobs here in Canada.”

On Tuesday, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Ralph Goodale, on behalf of Western Economic Diversification Canada, announced the $2.2 million investment for the SCCS that is expected to create 50 jobs.

The SCCS is a world-class scientific facility for innovation in nuclear imaging and treatment in living specimens, including plants, animals and humans. Since 2011, the SCCS has provided medical isotopes for more than 5,000 PET scans for patients in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba, to diagnose and treat cancer.
