CANADIAN NUCLEAR INDUSTRY CONGRATULATES THE PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF ONTARIO

June 8, 2018

OTTAWA (June 8, 2018) – The Canadian nuclear industry congratulates Premier-designate Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario on their election victory.

“We look forward to working with the Progressive Conservative government to ensure that nuclear energy continues to power Ontario’s economy and households with clean, reliable and affordable electricity,” said Dr. John Barrett, the President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association.

“The new government can count on Ontario’s nuclear industry to provide all-important baseload power to the province,” added Dr. Barrett. “This includes the continued operation of the Pickering nuclear generating station until 2024, the refurbishment of the Darlington nuclear generating station and the Major Component Replacement Project at the Bruce Power nuclear site.”

As the Ontario Long-Term Energy Plan concluded: “The most cost-effective option for producing the baseload generation the province needs while releasing no GHG emissions is to refurbish Ontario’s nuclear generating stations.”

Ontario is home to 18 nuclear power reactors, which in 2017 produced over 60% of the province’s electricity.

Ontario is also very active in advancing nuclear science and technology, with research facilities such as Chalk River Laboratories, which provide highly-skilled jobs and innovation in energy, medicine, materials science and advanced manufacturing.

The nuclear industry in Canada employs 60,000 people directly and indirectly, has revenues of approximately $6.6. billion and contributes $1.5 billion in federal and provincial taxes.
