The nuclear industry associations from various countries, has issued a statement calling for Group of Seven (G7) governments to embrace nuclear deployment as a strategic priority by maximizing the use of existing nuclear power plants and setting clear plans for further deployment that would fulfil the targets they set at COP28 to triple global nuclear capacity.

The statement was signed by the heads of Associazione Italiana Nucleare, Canadian Nuclear Association, Groupement des Industriels Français de l’Energie Nucléaire (Gifen), Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, Nuclear Energy Institute, Nuclear Industry Association, Nucleareurope and World Nuclear Association, and presented to Italy’s Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

In anticipation of having Canada host the G7 Summit next year, John Gorman, President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association, is confident that nuclear will factor heavily into the agenda and will be a focus for Canada’s G7 Presidency.

“Canada does a handful of things exceptionally well, and nuclear is one of them,” John Gorman said. “Together with the industry, our country will have the opportunity to share with the world what we have done to ensure the future health of our nuclear ecosystem. Nuclear energy is central to our environment and security goals and an incredible economic asset for Canada.”
