Statement by Canadian Nuclear Association President John Gorman on the Indigenous Advisory Council for SMR Action Plan

Following today’s announcement of an Indigenous Advisory Council for the SMR Action Plan, please find below a statement from John Gorman, President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association.

“The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) commends the Government of Canada’s launch of an initiative to support Indigenous communities through exploring the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to provide emissions-free energy.”

“Beyond their ability to drastically lower emissions and to help decarbonize Canada’s heavy industry, SMRs are uniquely positioned to provide clean energy to remote or off-the-grid communities and transition away from reliance on diesel.”

“The Government of Canada’s investment in the First Nations Power Authority to create a national Indigenous Advisory Council, as part of Canada’s SMR Action Plan, represents welcomed progress in leveraging the potential of nuclear technology as a critical tool in helping fight climate change and to drive socio-economic progress in Canada.”

“The nuclear industry acknowledges the value and central role Indigenous communities and businesses play in helping build a green economy.”
