Canadian Nuclear Association Welcomes Liability Amendments

TORONTO (10 juin 2013) – The Canadian Nuclear Association welcomes today’s announcement that the federal government proposes to amend the Nuclear Liability Act.
“We have consistently supported an increase in the liability limit,” said association president Heather Kleb. “We look forward to participating in the legislative process when it takes place.”
The federal minister of natural resources, Joe Oliver, told the Canadian Nuclear Society’s annual conference today that the government intends to introduce amendments to the legislation in the fall session of Parliament.
The government has introduced amendments on four previous occasions but each effort remained on the order paper when Parliament concluded its sessions.
Kleb added: “We are proud that no claim has ever been filed under the liability act. This reflects our industry’s constant focus on improving safety and performance.”
Kleb also welcomed Oliver’s statement that Canada will ratify the Convention on Supplementary Compensation. The international convention enables a consistent international approach to managing nuclear liability.
The Canadian Nuclear Association represents 30,000 Canadian men and women who mine uranium, generate electricity, advance nuclear medicine and export Canadian scientific and technological expertise.
