How Bruce Power is giving back
During the COVID-19 crisis, Bruce Power is making sure Ontario’s homes, health-care facilities and essential businesses have a reliable supply of electricity.
The company is also going further with several initiatives to help the community in other ways.
On April 1, Bruce Power announced a donation of 600,000 pieces of personal protective equipment to the front-line health-care workers battling COVID-19. Bruce Power’s commitment includes masks, gloves and gowns, all of which are in short supply as the pandemic continues.
“We look forward to using our logistics and supply chain to get this equipment to the front lines as soon as possible through local and provincial organizations, our counties in southwestern Ontario and the Ministry of Health,” Bruce Power President and CEO Mike Rencheck said in a statement.
Rencheck made the announcement during an on-air conversation with Ontario Premier Doug Ford on a local radio station in Bruce County. The donation won praise from the premier, who called it “probably one of the largest donations we’ve had.”
This donation is just one of many ways Bruce Power has helped during the COVID-19 crisis.
- On April 2, the company held a Facebook Live chat between James Scongack, Bruce Power Executive Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Operational Services, and Ian Arra, Grey Bruce Health Unit’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. They provided the latest information on COVID-19 and answered questions from the public.
- On March 25, Bruce Power announced it completed its final shipments of cobalt-60 for the first half of 2020 to Nordion to process and distribute to medical facilities across Canada and the world. Access to cobalt-60 has taken on greater urgency with the COVID-19 outbreak because of the isotope’s effectiveness in sterilizing drapes, gowns, surgical gloves, scalpels and other single-use medical devices.
- On March 20, Bruce Power announced it made a $300,000 donation to local food banks, effectively quintupling the size of the company’s annual donations.
- On March 19, Bruce Power hosted a Virtual Town Hall with health officials from Grey and Bruce counties providing the latest information on prevention and protection around the COVID-19 pandemic. The event reached an estimated 75,000 residents. Bruce Power also hosted a similar event on April 7.
