We are a national association of well over 100 organizations involved in bringing the benefits of nuclear technology to Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019industrie nucl\u00e9aire canadienne offre l\u2019emploi \u00e0 soixante-et-onze mille personnes dans des secteurs reli\u00e9s directement ou indirectement \u00e0 tous les aspects de la technologie nucl\u00e9aire \u00e0 savoir :\u00a0 l\u2019exploration et l\u2019extraction d\u2019uranium, la production d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, les avanc\u00e9es de la m\u00e9decine nucl\u00e9aire, l\u2019ex\u00e9cution du d\u00e9veloppement technologique et de la recherche avanc\u00e9e, et la cr\u00e9ation des emplois hautement qualifi\u00e9s en exportant des produits et des services \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle internationale.<\/p>\n<p>Nos membres sont tous des partenaires tr\u00e8s proches de nos communaut\u00e9s d\u2019accueil. Nous avons besoin d\u2019eux et ils ont besoin de nous.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019industrie de l\u2019extraction d\u2019uranium constitue un employeur important pour les peuples autochtones dans les collectivit\u00e9s nordiques. Nous fournissons des emplois bien r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9s, en particulier dans le secteur industriels, dont la plupart exigent de haute comp\u00e9tences et qualification, \u00e0 environ 2,000 personnes dans les collectivit\u00e9s \u00e9loign\u00e9es, et pr\u00e8s de la moiti\u00e9 d\u2019entre eux sont des Autochtones, (c-a-d\u00a0 900 d\u2019entre eux aujourd\u2019hui).<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Chairman, just one of our members, Areva Canada, anticipates growing its workforce by over 60% over the next three years, and half of those new hires will be aboriginal.<\/p>\n<p>Another of our members, Aurora Energy Limited, is working on a large scale uranium project in Labrador.\u00a0 If the regulatory hurdles are cleared, Aurora anticipates needing up to 700 construction workers to build the facilities for the mine mill complex.\u00a0 After that, it should employ about 400 on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these jobs could be filled by employees from the surrounding communities, which are small, widely separated, and primarily Inuit, with low rates of other employment.\u00a0 Aurora\u2019s project will be a tremendous opportunity for people of the Labrador Coast to find long term meaningful employment near home.\u00a0 Government training funds and assistance will enhance this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>The several years before the Michelin Project starts in earnest should be used to provide secondary school upgrading, making it easier for potential workers to be involved in higher level operator training opportunities that the project will bring.<\/p>\n<p>The Michelin Project is only an example.\u00a0 The quality of the uranium resource in Canada is excellent, and the government has been working with us and made real progress in opening major new markets in China and elsewhere.\u00a0 Many more jobs are expected if the regulatory environment permits them to be realized.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like Cameco Inc., Areva Canada, Aurora Resources and Denison Mines also buy products and services from aboriginal-owned businesses to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars per year.\u00a0 This amplifies the economic benefits in these towns, and helps aboriginal people make the move from employee to owner, which is a crucial step in sustained economic development.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at Cameco\u2019s website, on the Community Investment page, you\u2019ll see details of eleven scholarship programs that Cameco supports.\u00a0 One of them is the Northern Scholarship Program, which is open to young people who have lived in Saskatchewan\u2019s north for ten years or at least half their life if they\u2019re under twenty.\u00a0 There are also scholarships in business, geological sciences and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to scholarships, our member companies like Cameco offer direct training to employees and even to suppliers.\u00a0 But the starting point has to be sound primary and secondary education.\u00a0 While obviously it\u2019s not our companies\u2019 mandate to provide that, we certainly want to align and partner with the people who do provide it, so that these young people face as few barriers as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Chairman, we strongly urge governments to collaborate with communities and businesses in order to pull down those barriers and make optimum use of available investment dollars for education.<\/p>\n<p>In such small communities, there is very limited infrastructure and local capacity.\u00a0 Projects face a lot of challenges.\u00a0 We all need to wear several hats and we all need to be both students and teachers.\u00a0 We need to share our skills, volunteer on each other\u2019s committees, sponsor each other\u2019s events.\u00a0 So the partnership I\u2019m talking about is really on a person-to-person level.<\/p>\n<p>My final point, Mr. Chairman, is that motivation matters.\u00a0 Allowing young people to see the link from school to work, and letting them taste the rewards of working, can be very influential.\u00a0 They can see the employer not so much as a corporate entity, but as a group of people.<\/p>\n<p>Internships and similar programs let young people get a first-hand look at the career opportunities and the benefits of education, and perhaps let them earn a little money while they\u2019re in school.\u00a0 This can inspire them to work and
