{"id":8406,"date":"2013-04-19T01:00:46","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T05:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cna.ca\/?post_type=news&#038;p=8406"},"modified":"2020-03-10T13:55:32","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T17:55:32","slug":"nuclear-industry-joins-fight-to-cure-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2013\/04\/19\/nuclear-industry-joins-fight-to-cure-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Industry Joins Fight to Cure&nbsp;Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>OTTAWA (19 avril 2013)<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>The Canadian Nuclear Association has joined the Canadian Cancer Society\u2019s campaign to find a cure for cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members play a key role in researching and developing the technologies that treat cancer,\u201d said association president Heather Kleb. \u201cCanada supplies a significant amount of the world&#8217;s medical isotopes for nuclear medicine, which are used every day in thousands of procedures here at home and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very pleased to partner with the Canadian Nuclear Association, and appreciate its members\u2019 support in our fundraising activities,\u201d said Scott Fairbairn, Director, Corporate Development at the Canadian Cancer Society. \u201cNuclear technology provides innovative ways to diagnose, monitor, and treat cancer, and we are proud to support research in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear medicine is used in targeted cancer treatments for a variety of conditions, including liver and brain cancer, and non-Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>The isotopes used in medical imaging enable physicians to diagnose and treat a multitude of diseases including cardiac and neurological conditions, in addition to several types of cancers.<\/p>\n<p>A medical isotope is a radioactive substance used in safe, cost-effective imaging and treatment of disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of these advances would have been possible without research,\u201d said Kleb. \u201cWe have come so far, thanks to the many studies and clinical trials funded by the Canadian Cancer Society. Our members look forward to a new era in cancer therapy and prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Canadian Cancer Society, over 60% of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive at least five years after their diagnosis.
