{"id":28096,"date":"2018-11-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-27T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2018\/11\/27\/harriet-brooks-great-great-niece-to-inspire-next-generation-of-women-in-science-3\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:26:45","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:26:45","slug":"harriet-brooks-great-great-niece-to-inspire-next-generation-of-women-in-science-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2018\/11\/27\/harriet-brooks-great-great-niece-to-inspire-next-generation-of-women-in-science-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Harriet Brooks&#8217; great-great niece to inspire next generation of women in&nbsp;science"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_20775\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20775\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Harriet-Brooks-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canada\u2019s first female nuclear physicist Harriet Brooks<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Harriet Brooks was the first Canadian female nuclear physicist, who worked as a graduate student with Sir Ernest Rutherford at McGill University around the beginning of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>She was among the first persons to discover radon and to try to determine its atomic mass.<\/p>\n<p>Well known in Canadian nuclear circles, Brooks is not a household name like Marie Curie, under whose supervision Brooks briefly worked.<\/p>\n<p>While Canadian Nuclear Laboratories recently named a nuclear research laboratory at Chalk River in her name and she is a member of the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame, she hasn\u2019t made an impact in the non-academic and non-science culture like Curie, who was honoured, for example, with a Google Doodle on the anniversary of her birth.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 85 years after she passed away, one of her descendants is trying to bring her story to life on stage.<\/p>\n<p>WONDER is a stage production in development about the gender barriers faced by Brooks. It is the first play written by Canadian actor Ellen Denny, Brooks\u2019 great-great-niece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this project, I hope to honour the countless women in science who have been silenced, and invigorate those who continue the fight for gender equity,\u201d says Denny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also an important goal of mine to connect this historical science story and play of Harriet Brooks with the contemporary science community.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20778\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20778 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Harriet-Brooks-building-opening.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Harriet-Brooks-building-opening.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Harriet-Brooks-building-opening-300x200.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Opening of the Harriet Brooks building at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Brooks left the world of physics at the peak of her career upon marriage to assume the occupation of wife and mother.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/politics\/ottawa\/why-harriet-brooks-fits-the-bill\/\">Maclean\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0magazine, Geoff Rayner-Canham, a chemistry professor at Newfoundland\u2019s Memorial University who has written about Brooks, explained why she left the science community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened was that she got engaged to a physicist at Barnard College, which is an old women\u2019s college in the States, and she told the dean she was planning to marry. The dean sent a letter back saying that she was not willing to have anyone in the department who put her work second, but didn\u2019t think it was appropriate for a married woman to put her career before her family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While what happened to Brooks could be attributed to social mores at the time, Denny believes her story is relevant to the barriers that still exist for women today who balance career with family.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20777\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20777 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Ellen-Denny-240x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Ellen-Denny-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Ellen-Denny-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Ellen-Denny-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Ellen-Denny.jpg 1000w\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canadian actress Ellen Denny<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a slick video on her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1830171609\/wonder-play-development-workshop\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a>\u00a0page she launched to fund the production, Denny lists some current stats on gender and science. For example, in 2010, just 12.4 per cent of physics faculty at Canadian universities were women and only 30 per cent of female high school students take physics, compared to 60 per cent of male high school students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe play WONDER is a chance to build a bridge between the science and arts communities, and to spark discussion about how to build workplaces with equitable opportunity for all,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>The reaction to Denny\u2019s project has been positive so far.
