An energy future that, if climate goals are to be realized, must include a mix of clean, cost-efficient, reliable power. Several companies in Canada and beyond are racing to create the nuclear reactors of tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the next generation of nuclear. #NextGenNuclear<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16826\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16826\" class=\" wp-image-16826\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LukeLebel-300x273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LukeLebel-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LukeLebel-768x700.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LukeLebel-1024x933.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/LukeLebel.jpg 1750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Luke Lebel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Luke Lebel is one example of young leaders looking to slow down the impacts of climate change thanks to nuclear technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI finished my undergrad degree in 2008 and I was thinking about grad school and was wondering where I could make a difference\u201d, said Lebel, a Research Scientist at CNL. \u201cI liked the idea of energy and helping to mitigate climate change, and I chose the nuclear industry because I think it can make the most amount of difference in replacing fossil fuel energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lebel concludes strongly that engaging with his peers and advocating for nuclear will be key to the industry\u2019s future success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to start connecting with young people and have an image out there that makes us feel high tech. If you want to be like Google, you have to act like Google,\u201d said Lebel.<\/p>\n<p>Possessing a strong background in research and analysis, Lebel believes steering a successful next generation of nuclear will require information sharing, communication, mentoring and partnership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople of my generation are going to be working on the issue (Paris climate goals) the whole time. The role of younger people is really important just because of that,\u201d said Lebel.<\/p>\n<p>The International Energy Agency in its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldenergyoutlook.org\/resources\/energydevelopment\/energyaccessdatabase\/\">2016 World Energy Outlook<\/a>, estimates that 16% of the world\u2019s population still lives without access to electricity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16827\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16827\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16827\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RoryOSullivan-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RoryOSullivan-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RoryOSullivan-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/RoryOSullivan-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Rory O&#8217;Sullivan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn order for people to lift themselves out of poverty, particularly in Africa, they need energy to be cheap and clean\u201d, according to Rory O\u2019Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer at Moltex Energy.<\/p>\n<p>This need to help others is what lead O\u2019Sullivan to forge a path in clean energy. A mechanical engineer by trade, his career took him through project management construction and wind energy before landing on nuclear and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moltexenergy.com\/\">Moltex Energy<\/a> was born.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Moltex Energy announced a partnership with Deloitte and is in talks with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), and major utilities to work together on this vision for #NextGenNuclear. Moltex team member Eirik Peterson was also recognized for his work on reactor physics by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/pressreleases\/iaea-awards-young-nuclear-scientists-for-research-on-fast-reactors-and-related-fuel-cycles\"> International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),<\/a> as the recipient of a \u201cYoung Innovator\u201d award in Russia recently along with Lebel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe waste is concentrated and produces a lot of heat, you can\u2019t put it in the ground, but if you shield it and put it into a box, you can plug that box into a turbine,\u201d said O\u2019Sullivan. \u201cThat box can then produce power for 10 years, maintenance free.
