Globally, heart disease is responsible for over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs317\/en\/\">30% of all deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiologyinfo.org\/en\/pdf\/cardinuclear.pdf\">cardiac nuclear medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17406 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Heart-FEATURE1120-1024x427.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Heart-FEATURE1120-1024x427.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Heart-FEATURE1120-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Heart-FEATURE1120-768x320.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Heart-FEATURE1120.jpg 1120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Instead of performing surgery, doctors, by using small amounts of radioactive material, can look inside the human body to diagnose diseases like heart disease. This noninvasive procedure involves injecting small amounts of radiation and looking at the heart at a molecular level, providing accurate and early diagnosis, which is key to treating and saving lives.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina is increasing investment in nuclear medicine to help patients with cardiovascular disease, as recently highlighted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/looking-inside-hearts-in-argentina-using-nuclear-science-to-find-disease\">International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/a>. Through a collaboration between the Argentinean government and the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), the IAEA is offering up training and equipment in order to provide increased access to nuclear medicine services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe multimillion-euro investment involves building six new centres across the country that will offer high-quality nuclear medicine and radiotherapy services. The new centres will be operating in the Argentinean provinces of R\u00edo Gallegos, R\u00edo Negro, Santiago del Estero, Formosa, Entre R\u00edos and La Pampa,\u201d according to the IAEA.<\/p>\n<p>There are two different types of tests that can be used to scan the heart. The main difference between the two is the type of radiotracer used. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/HeartAttack\/DiagnosingaHeartAttack\/Positron-Emission-Tomography-PET_UCM_446359_Article.jsp#.Wh2n-1WnGUk\">PET (Positron Emission Tomography<\/a>) scan, positrons work with a tracer to take pictures of a patient\u2019s heart. The pictures can detect blood flow; identify heart attack scars; and even detect if arteries are narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>The second test that relies on nuclear medicine is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/HeartAttack\/SymptomsDiagnosisofHeartAttack\/Single-Photon-Emission-Computed-Tomography-SPECT_UCM_446358_Article.jsp\">SPECT (Single Photo Emission Computed Tomography)<\/a> scan.\u00a0 It allows doctors to get a 3D image of a patients heart in order to determine overall heart health, including blood flow; whether or not a patient has had a heart attack; and to diagnose coronary artery disease or a build up of plaque inside the heart\u2019s main arteries.<\/p>\n<p>Investments in early cardiac detection and treatment are key. According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/who.int\/gho\/mortality_burden_disease\/en\/\">World Health Organization (WHO<\/a>); \u201cIschaemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive lung disease and lower respiratory infections have remained the top killers during the past decade.\u201d In Argentina, it is the leading cause of premature death.<\/p>\n<p>Managing your diet, sleep and even stress levels can all lower a person\u2019s risk for developing heart disease. Early detection can help to identify risks in time for treatment to save lives. Thanks to nuclear medicine this can be done.
