Many countries seek secure, cost-competitive energy sources that avoid the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/pdf\/assessment-report\/ar5\/syr\/SYR_AR5_SPMcorr1.pdf\">climate-changing greenhouse gases<\/a> generated by coal, natural gas and oil.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div id=\"attachment_10705\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10705\" class=\"wp-image-10705 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Terrestrial-Energy2-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"IMSR plant\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Terrestrial-Energy2-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Terrestrial-Energy2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IMSR plant.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThe need for game-changing innovation is far, far stronger this decade than decades before,\u201d said Irish. \u201cWe face many problems identifying secure, safe and economically competitive energy supplies over the next two decades. Solving that problem with existing approaches is probably not practical.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/terrestrialenergy.com\/imsr-technology\/\">molten-salt reactor system<\/a> differs fundamentally from today\u2019s water-cooled commercial reactors. Instead of using solid uranium as fuel, it dissolves the uranium in liquid salt mix. Irish said the technique gives the molten-salt reactor a unique safety profile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t lose primary coolant because your fuel and your coolant are one and the same,\u201d Irish explained, \u201cand they are not under pressure as they are in traditional solid-fuel reactors.\u00a0 The IMSR system is passively safe \u2013 meaning safety is assured even in the absence of backup power.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div id=\"attachment_10706\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10706\" class=\"wp-image-10706 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Terrestrial-Energy3-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"IMSR section view\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Terrestrial-Energy3-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Terrestrial-Energy3.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10706\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IMSR section view.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Although the molten-salt reactor is not yet commercially available, it uses a recognized, proven nuclear technology demonstrated in the late 1950s to the 1970s by the illustrious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornl.gov\/\">Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a> in Tennessee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The trick is to change a working laboratory reactor into a reactor suitable for industry \u2013 and that\u2019s where Innovation comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Building on the Oak Ridge demonstrations, Terrestrial Energy has developed a reactor system that appears simple, safe to operate, convenient and highly cost effective for industry. \u00a0It could enter service early next decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first step on our path to commercialization involves the manufacturing and construction of our first commercial reactor at a site in Canada, and obtaining a license to operate it from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nuclearsafety.gc.ca\/eng\/\">CNSC<\/a>,\u201d explains Irish. \u201cWe intend to have it up and running and connected to the grid by early next decade.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Terrestrial Energy is on the path to commercializing its Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR), which it says holds the greatest promise as an alternative to conventional energy sources. \u201cWe believe we have a technology that is ideal for the small modular reactor market,\u201d said Simon Irish, chief executive of Terrestrial Energy, based in Toronto. \u201cWe [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[537],"tags":[],"topic":[],"class_list":["post-27935","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-talknuclear"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
