Where the burning of fossil fuels is a distant memory of a bygone era, long before advances in alternative energy sources for transportation were developed and commercially viable.<\/p>\n<p>The promising science behind hydrogen as an energy source to power our everyday lives is a prospect that has captured the imagination of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnl.ca\/en\/home\/default.aspx\">Canadian Nuclear Laboratories<\/a> (CNL) researchers, and prompted CNL to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailyobserver.ca\/2015\/01\/08\/cnl-commissions-55-million-lab\">open a new lab<\/a> at its site in Chalk River, Ontario.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10698\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_003-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Hydrogen laboratory at CNL\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_003-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_003.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>CNL\u2019s advantage in exploring future hydrogen applications stems from its six decades of experience with hydrogen isotopes such as deuterium and tritium. (Deuterium is the heavy hydrogen in the water used to cool fissioning uranium in CANDU nuclear reactors. It\u2019s exactly like the regular hydrogen that bonds with oxygen to produce water, except it has a neutron \u2013 the extra weight that makes the water \u201cheavy.\u201d Likewise, radioactive tritium has two neutrons.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10695\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL-Hydrogen-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Hydrogen laboratory at CNL\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL-Hydrogen-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL-Hydrogen.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>CNL\u2019s depth of experience is now being applied to exploring large-scale production of hydrogen using technology that can be integrated with nuclear energy. Essentially, this technology would use surplus electricity \u2013 either nuclear or renewable \u2013 as the clean form of energy needed to produce this resource.<\/p>\n<p>Where could it lead? The \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen_economy\">hydrogen economy<\/a>,\u201d perhaps.\u00a0 Hydrogen is a low-carbon energy source that someday could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.world-nuclear.org\/info\/Non-Power-Nuclear-Applications\/Transport\/Transport-and-the-Hydrogen-Economy\/\">replace gasoline for transportation<\/a> or natural gas for heating. Hydrogen is attractive because the only by-product from its use is water \u2013 the regular kind. The bottom line: no harmful emissions to the environment whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10699 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_001-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Hydrogen laboratory at CNL\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_001.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In opening his company\u2019s $55 million lab in January 2015, CNL President &amp; CEO Dr. Robert Walker said, \u201cThis new laboratory will enable state-of-the-art research to ensure a clean and healthy environment for Canadians through the development and use of clean energy technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work that will be carried out within these walls builds on CNL\u2019s global leadership position in hydrogen technologies. It enables us to develop safe and secure options for Canada\u2019s future energy needs. And it gives us the foundation to leverage and direct our capabilities into other industry sectors and international markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10701\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_008-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Hydrogen laboratory at CNL\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_008-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/CNL_008.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The new lab\u2019s equipment comes from other innovative Canadian nuclear companies such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kinectrics.com\/pages\/home.aspx\">Kinectrics<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkmodular.com\/\">TurnKey Modular Systems<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tyne-engineering.com\/\">Tyne Engineering<\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/angstromengineering.com\/\">Angstrom Engineering<\/a>. Each piece of equipment enables an experimental process to measure the performance of a chemical or physical transformation involving hydrogen. For example, one of the rigs measures the rate at which hydrogen reacts with oxygen at various conditions using different catalytic materials.<\/p>\n<p>CNL\u2019s hydrogen lab is an excellent example of Canadian strength in science and technology, and a product of Canada\u2019s work to explore civilian applications for nuclear technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine a world where driving to work is no more harmful to the environment than walking or cycling.
