{"id":27903,"date":"2014-11-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2014\/11\/25\/saskatoon-shines\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:41:11","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:41:11","slug":"saskatoon-shines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2014\/11\/25\/saskatoon-shines\/","title":{"rendered":"Saskatoon&nbsp;Shines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By John Stewart<\/b><br \/>\n<em>Director, Policy and Research<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Canadian Nuclear Association<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3625\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3625\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3625\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Cobalt-60.jpg\" alt=\"Cobalt-60 machine\" width=\"210\" height=\"140\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sylvia Fedoruk and Dr. Harold Johns with an early cobalt-60 machine.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Northern Saskatchewan has been leading in nuclear technology since the early 1950s.\u00a0 That\u2019s when researchers at the University of Saskatchewan pioneered cobalt-based therapy for cancer.<\/p>\n<p>One of those researchers was a student named Sylvia Fedoruk, the medical physicist and oncologist who also contributed to the development of nuclear medical scanning systems.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Saskatoon-based Fedoruk Centre for Nuclear Innovation funds a wide range of research initiatives in nuclear technology, many of them in the health sciences.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3627\" style=\"width: 487px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3627\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3627\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Fedoruk-centre.jpg\" alt=\"Fedoruk centre\" width=\"477\" height=\"253\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 2014 nuclearFACTS event on November 20.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last week the Fedoruk Centre hosted two back-to-back events.\u00a0 On November 20, <strong>nuclearFACTS<\/strong> presented funded projects in nuclear research, development and training in Saskatchewan in the areas of nuclear medicine, nuclear energy and safety, materials\u00a0 research and environmental studies.\u00a0 It drew a total of about 80 participants.<\/p>\n<p>And the following day, the <strong>Accelerate <\/strong>workshop, which CNA proudly sponsored, provided a day of discussion of nuclear research, innovation and financing.\u00a0 The researchers shared knowledge of fields from veterinary medicine to applied physics to venture finance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3637\" style=\"width: 495px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3637\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3637\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/accelerate-workshop1.jpg\" alt=\"Accelerate workshop\" width=\"485\" height=\"217\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The inaugural Accelerate workshop on November 21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A central theme coming out of this wide-ranging discussion was that nuclear technologies are \u201cboth new and old.\u201d \u00a0Like steam engines in the 1820s, electricity in the 1920s, or telephony in the 1980s, nuclear today has been around for decades \u2013 yet may be just beginning to find its most powerful applications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By John Stewart Director, Policy and Research Canadian Nuclear Association Northern Saskatchewan has been leading in nuclear technology since the early 1950s.\u00a0 That\u2019s when researchers at the University of Saskatchewan pioneered cobalt-based therapy for cancer.
