{"id":27900,"date":"2014-10-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-29T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2014\/10\/29\/the-thousand-islands-energy-research-forum\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:41:12","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:41:12","slug":"the-thousand-islands-energy-research-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2014\/10\/29\/the-thousand-islands-energy-research-forum\/","title":{"rendered":"The Thousand Islands Energy Research&nbsp;Forum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By John Stewart<\/b><br \/>\n<em>Director, Policy and Research<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Canadian Nuclear Association<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uocal.uottawa.ca\/en\/node\/8909\">Thousand Islands Energy Research Forum<\/a> took place at the University of Ottawa this past weekend. <a href=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/\">CNA<\/a> took advantage of this great opportunity to present the recent Hatch life cycle emission study, which had been launched on October 8 at our Toronto fall seminar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3586\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/JS-presentation.jpg\" alt=\"John Stewart presentation\" width=\"364\" height=\"326\" \/><\/p>\n<p>TIERF, an annual academic event that mixes energy policy and technology, drew about 40 university, government and industry participants this year. They brought presentations and technical posters on energy technology research, ranging from shale gas to geothermal to nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>CNA director of research and policy John Stewart delivered a summary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Hatch-CNA-Report-RevE.pdf\">Hatch study<\/a> along with CNA\u2019s key messages from it. While nuclear is roughly as clean-emitting as wind for power generation, wind cannot stand alone due to its intermittency, and any assessment of wind\u2019s environmental effects must include the impact of managing that intermittency.<\/p>\n<p>In Ontario today, new wind farms are only generating about 20% of their capacity, and when the wind fails to blow, the difference is generally made up by burning natural gas, a fossil fuel. This means that building new wind capacity means building in more, not less, GHG emissions to Ontario\u2019s supply mix \u2013 undoing some of the benefits of the province\u2019s successful exit from coal.<\/p>\n<p>CNA\u2019s presentation on October 25 was preceded by an excellent analysis by u of O\u2019s Olayinka Willliams on \u201cThe Integration of Wind Power Generation with Hydroelectricity in an Electric Grid,\u201d which expounded the many problems of bringing randomly intermittent wind power into a grid, even when hydro is available to back it up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3589\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/GHG-Emissions-infograph-FINAL-English.png\" alt=\"GHG emissions by energy type\" width=\"611\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epri.com\/Pages\/Default.aspx\">Electric Power Research Institute<\/a>, \u201cthe existing electric power grid, especially its distribution systems, was not designed to accommodate a high penetration of distributed energy resources while sustaining high levels of electric quality and reliability.\u201d (\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epri.com\/abstracts\/Pages\/ProductAbstract.aspx?ProductId=000000003002002733\">The Integrated Grid<\/a>,\u201d February 2014).
