It has to be the sum of ten and three, and it also has to be half of twenty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3578\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/2+2.jpg\" alt=\"2+2\" width=\"333\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You pause before replying, wondering where the trick is. \u201cUm. Wouldn\u2019t that be thirteen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you just said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirteen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSsshhh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways been. Inherently dangerous number. Killed thousands. Toxic legacy. That question\u2019s settled. Now back to our problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay,\u201d you say. \u201cWhere do we stand so far?\u201d`<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like you to take a look at four and a half. There&#8217;s a big constituency for four and a half around here. Always has been. We think it can be the solution&#8230;\u00a0just needs a bit of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think some help from eight will be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour and a half with help from eight?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that twelve and a half?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t put it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be almost you-know-what, and we\u2019re just not going there. Anyway, now we\u2019re getting a subsidy for eight, so we really want to keep eight in the picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you really think four and a half with help from eight is going to satisfy the specifications of the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s between twelve and fourteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, yes, but it\u2019s two numbers, not one. It\u2019s not equal to ten plus three, and it\u2019s not half of twenty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand your point, but there are bound to be a few gaps. We think users of the number system are ready for change. With education, lots of them will accept four and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if they don\u2019t? What if they only care whether it works? They\u2019ll expect it to equal ten plus three. They\u2019ll expect it to be half of twenty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you suggest, then, smart guy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suggested thirteen a while ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3581\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/find-x.jpg\" alt=\"find x\" width=\"340\" height=\"242\" \/>\u201cSSSHHH!\u00a0 You trying to get us both in trouble? Listen, maybe you have a point. But we need to keep this department working as a team. This you-know-what, it\u2019s too divisive. We can\u2019t shake them up like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow about you let me work on you-know-what, as long as I don\u2019t say it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo need. A bunch of us are already working on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirt\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSSSSHHHH! Yeah, that. We\u2019ve got an action team. Anytime anyone mentions it, we tell them it\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre they developing mathematical proofs that show it\u2019s not between twelve and fourteen? Or that it&#8217;s not equal to ten plus three, or that it\u2019s not half of twenty-six? You said something about it killing thousands, something about a toxic legacy \u2013 how about a straight-up factual comparison between you-know-what and four and a half?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could, but we don\u2019t need much of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have been hearing it\u2019s bad all their lives. We\u2019re mathematicians.
