{"id":27893,"date":"2014-10-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2014\/10\/16\/u-n-does-not-expect-cancer-increase-due-to-fukushima-radiation-2\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:41:12","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:41:12","slug":"u-n-does-not-expect-cancer-increase-due-to-fukushima-radiation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2014\/10\/16\/u-n-does-not-expect-cancer-increase-due-to-fukushima-radiation-2\/","title":{"rendered":"U.N. does not Expect Cancer Increase due to Fukushima&nbsp;Radiation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Romeo St-Martin<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Communications Officer<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Canadian Nuclear Association<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3418\" src=\"http:\/\/talknuclear.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Thyroid-scan.jpg\" alt=\"Thyroid scan\" width=\"828\" height=\"580\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With little media coverage and even less fanfare, the United Nations released a report in April that dispelled one of the most popular myths regarding the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) said in a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #009ddc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unscear.org\/unscear\/en\/fukushima.html\">report<\/a>\u00a0it did not expect \u201csignificant changes\u201d in future cancer rates that could be attributed to radiation exposure from the reactor meltdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doses to the general public, both those incurred during the first year and estimated for their lifetimes, are generally low or very low. No discernible increased incidence of radiation-related health effects are expected among exposed members of the public or their descendants,\u201d the report concluded.<\/p>\n<p>While the report clears radiation from negative health impacts, it noted that those in the areas affected by the meltdown were not immune to other health impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important health effect is on mental and social well-being, related to the enormous impact of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident, and the fear and stigma related to the perceived risk of exposure to ionizing radiation,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffects such as depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms have already been reported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So fear about the exposure to radiation was more of a health problem than radiation exposure itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Romeo St-Martin Communications Officer Canadian Nuclear Association With little media coverage and even less fanfare, the United Nations released a report in April that dispelled one of the most popular myths regarding the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown.
