{"id":27869,"date":"2014-06-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2014\/06\/27\/canada-u-s-mexico-face-unique-energy-challenges\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:41:16","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:41:16","slug":"canada-u-s-mexico-face-unique-energy-challenges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2014\/06\/27\/canada-u-s-mexico-face-unique-energy-challenges\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada, U.S., Mexico Face Unique Energy&nbsp;Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By John Stewart<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Director, Policy and Research<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Canadian Nuclear Association<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many serious challenges currently face utilities and major energy projects across North America.\u00a0 That was the overarching message from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldenergy.org\/\">World Energy Council<\/a>\u2019s North American Regional Forum, which brought Canadian, U.S. and Mexican representatives together in Calgary on June 26.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marie-Jose Nadeau, WEC chair, said big projects are increasingly \u201call-of-society\u201d issues, and once-national energy questions are increasingly international issues (as North Americans have seen with, for example, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/air\/transport\/fuel.htm\">EU\u2019s Fuel Directive<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Pollster Greg Lyle of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovativeresearch.ca\/\">Innovative Research<\/a> presented research on low public confidence in authority. Only about half of Canadians agree that \u201cgovernment and regulators do a good job protecting the public interest on major developments.\u201d This is consistent with an increasing lack of trust in authority. Large minorities of Canadians and Americans believe that corporations deliberately suppress environmentally beneficial technologies.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontohydro.com\/sites\/electricsystem\/Pages\/foryourhome.aspx\">Toronto Hydro<\/a> President Anthony Haines noted that while one-third of his company\u2019s infrastructure is past its expected lifespan, it is currently supporting unprecedented growth in high-density housing (\u201cbecoming another Manhattan\u201d) and bracing to host the 2015 Pan Am Games. A 20-year period of strong electricity cost increases is just beginning.<\/li>\n<li>Jim Burpee, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electricity.ca\/\">Canadian Electricity Association<\/a>\u00a0(CEA)\u00a0president, said that\u00a0increases in the cost of a commodity that accounts for about two per cent\u00a0of household expenses draw a disproportionate emotional response. This may be because consumers have no option to test price-quality trade-offs as they do for most products. CEA has worked with Innovative Research on how best to explain electricity\u2019s value proposition, and they focus on two tactics: comparing electricity to other necessities, and emphasizing the need to leave a reliable system for future generations. The result is a 30-second ad with the tag line, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0YAg8ODs13M\">Invest today. Power tomorrow.<\/a>\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0YAg8ODs13M\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/li>\n<li>While the U.S. and Canada have experienced the shale gas revolution, Mexico\u2019s demographic and economic growth has made it a net importer of oil and gas. Mexican delegates fleshed out their country\u2019s dramatic reform plans for the energy sector, which they expect will return Mexico to net exporter status.<\/li>\n<li>Mexico\u2019s electric power monopoly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfe.gob.mx\/paginas\/home.aspx\">CFE<\/a>, which is currently plagued by financial losses as well as power theft, will remain a state monopoly in transmission and distribution.
