{"id":27847,"date":"2014-03-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2014\/03\/18\/radioactive-packaging-put-to-the-test-passes-with-flying-colours\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:41:19","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:41:19","slug":"radioactive-packaging-put-to-the-test-passes-with-flying-colours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2014\/03\/18\/radioactive-packaging-put-to-the-test-passes-with-flying-colours\/","title":{"rendered":"Radioactive Packaging Put to the Test, Passes with Flying&nbsp;Colours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Romeo St-Martin<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Digital Media Officer<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Canadian Nuclear Association<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The recent incident at the port of Halifax is a real-life example of the high level of safety involved in the packaging and transport of nuclear substances in Canada and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, four steel cylinders encased in concrete containing uranium hexafluoride fell about six metres from inside a container at the Fairview Container Terminal at the port, landing in a contained area of a ship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urenco.com\/custom\/1\/homepage\/default.aspx\">URENCO<\/a> has said the cylinders came from its enrichment facility in the United Kingdom. The shipment was bound for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Fire and port officials evacuated the terminal and it remained closed until radiation experts confirmed there was no leak of radiation the following day.<\/p>\n<p>Halifax Fire and Emergency Executive Fire Officer Phil McNulty was quoted in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/no-evidence-of-radiological-leak-after-scare-at-halifax-port\/article17492400\/\">Canadian Press story<\/a> as saying the containers are extremely durable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The safety redundancies built in for the transportation of nuclear materials are unbelievable,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If this wasn&#8217;t done properly, we wouldn&#8217;t be singing the song we&#8217;re singing now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Every day, Canadians working in nuclear ship thousands of packages of radioactive material, many of them across the world. In five decades, there has been no transportation incident with significant radiological damage to people or the environment.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca\/eng\/\">Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission<\/a>, packages requiring certification have to undergo stringent testing. Testing must simulate both normal and accident conditions of transport.
