{"id":27706,"date":"2012-03-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ashleydev.com\/2012\/03\/14\/canadian-nuclear-association-encourages-government-to-give-full-consideration-to-ceaa-report-recommendations-2\/"},"modified":"2020-08-27T11:43:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T15:43:13","slug":"canadian-nuclear-association-encourages-government-to-give-full-consideration-to-ceaa-report-recommendations-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2012\/03\/14\/canadian-nuclear-association-encourages-government-to-give-full-consideration-to-ceaa-report-recommendations-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Nuclear Association Encourages Government to Give Full Consideration to CEAA Report&nbsp;Recommendations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>March 14, 2012 &#8211; Ottawa, ON<\/strong> \u2013 Canada\u2019s nuclear industry is encouraging the Government of Canada to give full consideration to the recommendations on the federal Environmental Assessment (EA) process made in the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development (\u201cthe Committee\u201d) Report on the Statutory Review of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA): Protecting the Environment, Managing our Resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members are committed to environmental stewardship and are supportive of the EA process, which provides a valuable planning tool, aimed at protecting the land, air and water in the areas where we live and work,\u201d said Denise Carpenter, President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association. \u201cWe agree with the Committee\u2019s reported findings that there are long-standing challenges with the implementation of the CEAA and the EA process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) is supportive of the Environment Committee\u2019s efforts to re-focus the EA process on \u201cwhat matters to the environment.\u201d The Report makes recommendations to remove process steps that add little or no value to the environment, and have the potential to draw attention away from what really matters.<\/p>\n<p>The CNA agrees \u00adwith the following Report recommendations for improving the EA process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>removing steps that do not actually affect the environmental outcome;<\/li>\n<li>applying information from past EAs of fundamentally similar projects;<\/li>\n<li>delegating powers to a single regulatory authority so that there is one EA by the best-placed regulator; and<\/li>\n<li>eliminate the need to repeat the EA process due to administrative decisions and minor approvals related to existing licenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEnvironmental Assessments are an integral part of how Canada\u2019s nuclear industry conducts its business and we have gained considerable insights from carrying them out,\u201d continued Carpenter. \u201cThe federal EA process should be more efficient and should lead to improved environmental outcomes.
