OTTAWA (December 13, 2018)<\/strong> \u2013 The Canadian nuclear industry welcomes the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance\u2019s report on the Pre-Budget Consultations<\/a>. The government has recognized Canada\u2019s nuclear advantage by specifically mentioning nuclear energy’s role in a low-carbon National Energy Strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Canadian Nuclear Association<\/a> (CNA) is pleased that the Committee directly and positively supports a number of key areas the CNA views as important, including recognition of the role of nuclear in contributing to Canada\u2019s climate change mitigation strategy, greenhouse gas reductions and a strong economy,\u201d said CNA President and CEO Dr. John Barrett.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the Committee recommends:<\/p>\n

\u201cDevelop and deliver a National Energy Strategy, which would consider all forms of low-carbon energy to help realize the goal of a clean environment and a strong economy through the deployment of new technologies, including nuclear power.\u201d [Recommendation 90]<\/p>\n

\u201cLeverage private sector funding and assets already owned by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to respond to the results of the Canadian Small Modular Reactor Roadmap, which would ensure Canada\u2019s leadership role in the development of small modular reactors for export, support economic growth and provide a domestic response to the need of northern and remote communities and industries to eliminate the use of diesel.\u201d [Recommendation 91]<\/p>\n

In addition, the Committee has identified the multitude of economic benefits from Canada\u2019s nuclear technology \u2013 including leadership in materials research for clean energy storage, advanced manufacturing, and the promotion of health through biomedical and life sciences. [Recommendation 30]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Committee has clearly recognized the promise of small modular reactors (SMRs) and Canada\u2019s leadership in this growing area of advanced clean technology,\u201d added Dr. Barrett.<\/p>\n
