OTTAWA (November 29, 2018)<\/strong> \u2013 The Canadian Nuclear Association<\/a>\u00a0(CNA) appreciates today\u2019s Ontario government\u2019s Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan<\/a> acknowledging the important contribution nuclear has made to Ontario\u2019s clean electricity grid.<\/p>\n

The plan noted the role nuclear has played in lowering the province\u2019s emissions 22 per cent since 2005.<\/p>\n

\u201cNuclear energy is vital to the success of Ontario\u2019s environment plan, because it is a clean, low-carbon technology that generates electricity without greenhouse gases,\u201d said CNA President and CEO John Barrett.<\/p>\n

Providing over 60 percent of Ontario\u2019s electricity supply, nuclear power anchors Ontario\u2019s performance as well as its reputation as a leading clean electricity province. Its baseload supply strength enabled Ontario to phase out coal generation, resulting in one of the most significant climate change mitigation achievements in North America.<\/p>\n

Refurbishment to extend the operational life of the nuclear reactors at OPG\u2019s Darlington plant<\/a> and Bruce Power\u2019s facility<\/a> in Tiverton is the largest clean energy investment in North America and will preserve Ontario\u2019s clean electricity advantage.<\/p>\n

The industry is looking to the future with technologies such as small modular reactors, which would help reduce emissions in Northern or rural communities and heavy industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether we will continue to deliver the affordable, clean, reliable electricity that is essential in achieving the province\u2019s environmental and economic goals,\u201d said Dr. Barrett. \u201cAs the largest source of the province\u2019s clean electricity, we look forward to working closely with the Ontario government to this end.\u201d<\/p>\n
