OTTAWA (February 15, 2018)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA)<\/a> congratulates Ontario Power Generation (OPG)<\/a> on today\u2019s announcement by the Ministry of Energy on the progress of the Darlington refurbishment project. The refurbishment on Unit 2 is now halfway complete and remains on budget and the province has confirmed its support for OPG to move forward with the refurbishment of Unit 3.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Darlington refurbishment will ensure that reliable nuclear energy continues to be the backbone of our generation fleet, which is now 96 per cent emission-free. This multi-phase project will continue to boost economic activity across Ontario, create jobs and secure a clean supply of affordable electricity for the future,\u201d according to Glenn Thibeault, Minister of Energy<\/p>\n

Low-cost, low-carbon nuclear power meets approximately 60% of the energy needs for Ontarians and is a major contributor to economic growth and job creation in the province. The investment in refurbishment is helping Ontario and Canada meet its climate commitments.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvestments in refurbishing Ontario\u2019s nuclear fleet provide a strategic advantage for the province. Our nuclear generating stations provide low-cost electricity, paramount to job creation and economic growth, while simultaneously allowing the province to continue to offset harmful greenhouse gas emissions,\u201d said John Barrett, President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association.<\/p>\n

Ontario\u2019s Long-Term Energy Plan (LTEP) reaffirms the government\u2019s commitment to nuclear energy with the refurbishment of 10 of Ontario\u2019s 18 nuclear reactors; ensuring economic stability for future generations. The nuclear industry in Ontario contributes more than $5 billion annually to the national economy and supports 50,000 jobs in the province with refurbishment creating thousands more. The refurbishment project is expected to be completed by 2033.<\/p>\n
