Tout comme le physicien\u00a0Cooper, il pense que les neutrinos rec\u00e8lent quelques r\u00e9ponses sur l\u2019\u00e9volution de l\u2019Univers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Conna\u00eetre les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s des neutrinos est essentiel \u00e0 la compr\u00e9hension de nos origines. Ils ont une influence consid\u00e9rable sur la mani\u00e8re dont l\u2019Univers \u00e9volue et dont les \u00e9l\u00e9ments sont cr\u00e9\u00e9s par l\u2019effondrement stellaire, etc.\u00a0\u00bb, affirme Art McDonald, Ph.\u00a0D., professeur \u00e9m\u00e9rite \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Queen\u2019s et laur\u00e9at du prix Nobel de physique. \u00ab\u00a0En fait, gr\u00e2ce aux diff\u00e9rentes r\u00e9actions nucl\u00e9aires dans les \u00e9toiles et les supernovae qui donnent naissance aux \u00e9l\u00e9ments, \u00e0 commencer par l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne, nous pouvons comprendre, selon un facteur de deux ou \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s, l\u2019abondance de tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments jusqu\u2019au fer. Cela confirme en quelque sorte d\u2019o\u00f9 viennent les \u00e9l\u00e9ments. Elles ont pu \u00eatre \u00e9tudi\u00e9es gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un d\u00e9tecteur souterrain planqu\u00e9 \u00e0 2\u00a0kilom\u00e8tres de profondeur, aussi haut qu\u2019un immeuble de 10 \u00e9tages et contenant en son c\u0153ur 1\u00a0000\u00a0tonnes d\u2019eau lourde pr\u00eat\u00e9e par des r\u00e9serves canadiennes\u00a0: le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Observatoire de neutrinos de Sudbury (ONS). En 2015, les travaux d\u2019Art\u00a0McDonald se sont vus r\u00e9compens\u00e9s par la plus haute distinction, le prix Nobel de physique, un honneur qu\u2019il a partag\u00e9 avec le physicien japonais Takaaki Kajita.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Certes, c\u2019est moi qui ai dirig\u00e9 les travaux et re\u00e7u le prix, mais des centaines de personnes y ont particip\u00e9, y compris des chercheurs de Chalk River. Deux cent soixante-treize auteurs ont sign\u00e9 les travaux, dont plus de deux cents \u00e9tudiants et chercheurs postdoctoraux\u00a0\u00bb, souligne M.\u00a0McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9cemment, les r\u00e9alisations d\u2019Art McDonald ont de nouveau \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9compens\u00e9es par la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cns-snc.ca\/cns\/wb_lewis_award\/\">Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 nucl\u00e9aire canadienne (SNC)<\/a>, recevant la prestigieuse m\u00e9daille W.B. Lewis. Cette distinction, nomm\u00e9e en l\u2019honneur du physicien et principal contributeur au d\u00e9veloppement du r\u00e9acteur CANDU, est d\u00e9cern\u00e9e chaque ann\u00e9e \u00e0 un chercheur dont l\u2019apport \u00e0 la science nucl\u00e9aire est remarquable. Art McDonald, comme W.B.\u00a0Lewis, a travaill\u00e9 \u00e0 Chalk River, o\u00f9 il a eu la chance de c\u00f4toyer l\u2019homme qui a donn\u00e9 son nom \u00e0 la distinction.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je n\u2019ai pas travaill\u00e9 avec lui, mais je l\u2019ai connu et je savais \u00e0 quel point il \u00e9tait important pour le secteur nucl\u00e9aire. C\u2019\u00e9tait quelqu\u2019un de tr\u00e8s intelligent qui a su innover dans le domaine\u00a0\u00bb, ajoute M. McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>Faisant \u00e9galement figure de pionnier, Art McDonald a vu ses travaux le conduire sous la surface terrestre, au laboratoire SNOLAB de Sudbury, en Ontario, afin de prot\u00e9ger ce dernier contre les rayons cosmiques susceptibles d\u2019interf\u00e9rer avec les mesures. Selon McDonald, les scientifiques de demain pourront compter sur des investissements dans la science et l\u2019\u00e9nergie nucl\u00e9aires.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je pense que le nucl\u00e9aire est une technologie tr\u00e8s importante pour l\u2019avenir et je suis convaincu que les techniques mises au point pour traiter les d\u00e9chets nucl\u00e9aires sont \u00e0 la hauteur, indique M. McDonald. Je pense que le nucl\u00e9aire est n\u00e9cessaire, car de nombreuses autres sources sur lesquelles nous devrions \u00e9galement travailler, notamment le solaire et l\u2019\u00e9olien, sont \u00e9pisodiques en soi.
