Des isotopes sont cr\u00e9\u00e9s, lorsque ces particules entrent en collision.<\/p>\n<p>Les isotopes m\u00e9dicaux sont des particules radioactives s\u00e9curitaires utilis\u00e9es pour diagnostiquer des troubles m\u00e9dicaux.<\/p>\n<p>Au total, la communaut\u00e9 m\u00e9dicale nucl\u00e9aire s\u2019appuie sur une vaste gamme d\u2019isotopes m\u00e9dicaux. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hc-sc.gc.ca\/dhp-mps\/brgtherap\/activit\/fs-fi\/isotopes-med-faq-fra.php\">Deux cent isotopes sont disponible<\/a>s; chacun \u00a0a ses propres caract\u00e9ristiques et permet \u00a0aux m\u00e9decins de regarder ce qui se passe \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du corps.<\/p>\n<p>Des isotopes aident \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter des troubles m\u00e9dicaux comme le cancer et le Parkinson par <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.ca\/fr-ca\/cancer-information\/diagnosis-and-treatment\/tests-and-procedures\/positron-emission-tomography-pet-scan\/?region=on\">la tomographie par \u00e9mission de positrons (TEP)<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.ca\/fr-ca\/cancer-information\/diagnosis-and-treatment\/tests-and-procedures\/computed-tomography-ct-scan\/?region=qc\">tomodensitom\u00e9trie (TDM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Un isotope nomm\u00e9 fluor 18 est fix\u00e9 \u00e0 un traceur pour en faire un produit radiopharmaceutique. Il est ensuite inject\u00e9 dans le patient et traverse son corps. Au Canada, la TEP et la TDM utilisent le produit radiopharmaceutique fluoro-d\u00e9oxyglucose (FDG). Environ 60 minutes apr\u00e8s l\u2019injection, la proc\u00e9dure de scan commence.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Le FDG est un sucre\u00a0 br\u00fbl\u00e9 par diff\u00e9rentes parties du corps et \u00e0 des rythmes diff\u00e9rents\u00a0\u00bb, explique le Dr Neil Alexander, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral du Fedoruk Centre. En m\u00e9decine nucl\u00e9aire, surtout en diagnostic, lorsqu\u2019 un sucre traverse le corps, tout ce qui br\u00fble le sucre \u00e0 un rythme plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 appara\u00eet sur le scan. Par exemple, des cellules canc\u00e9reuses br\u00fblent le sucre \u00e0 un rythme plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 que des cellules en sant\u00e9, ce qui permet aux m\u00e9decins de rep\u00e9rer le cancer et voir comment la maladie r\u00e9agit\u00a0 au traitement\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>La TEP et la TDM donnent aux m\u00e9decins de l\u2019information importante sur le lieu et l\u2019\u00e9tendue du cancer dans le corps. Le test permet aussi\u00a0 d\u2019\u00e9valuer le succ\u00e8s du traitement, ce qui donne une meilleure chance de survie aux patients.<\/p>\n<p>Un nouveau domaine pour les isotopes m\u00e9dicaux et les TEP\/TDM est le diagnostic et la recherche sur la maladie de Parkinson. Dans le cas du Parkinson, un diagnostic pr\u00e9coce est essentiel \u00a0pour augmenter les connaissances sur la progression de la maladie et la fa\u00e7on dont elle r\u00e9pond \u00e0 la th\u00e9rapie. Dans le cas des patients atteints de la maladie de Parkinson, le scan cherche \u00e0 d\u00e9pister une baisse des prot\u00e9ines utilis\u00e9e dans les synapses (ou jonctions entre les cellules nerveuses) dans le cerveau.<\/p>\n<p>Avant que le cyclotron ne commence \u00e0 produire des isotopes, ceux-ci devaient \u00eatre transport\u00e9s de l\u2019Ontario. Comme la radioactivit\u00e9 est de courte dur\u00e9e, le FDG ne peut pas \u00eatre entrepos\u00e9, d\u2019o\u00f9 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019un transport quotidien. Les d\u00e9fis que constituent une production t\u00f4t le matin puis la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 \u00a0du transport a\u00e9rien\u00a0 ont souvent engendr\u00e9\u00a0 des retards et des annulations et, par cons\u00e9quent, un service peu fiable pour les patients ayant besoin d\u2019un diagnostic m\u00e9dical.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, le tout venait de Hamilton et une grande partie du mat\u00e9riel \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 alt\u00e9r\u00e9, \u00a0si bien qu\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas possible de traiter autant de patients\u00a0\u00bb, explique Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>Une production locale signifie des soins de sant\u00e9 plus fiables pour les patients, la r\u00e9duction des temps d\u2019attente et un diagnostic plus rapide des patients.
