{"id":13914,"date":"2015-11-04T13:00:46","date_gmt":"2015-11-04T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/?post_type=news&#038;p=13914"},"modified":"2020-03-10T13:55:10","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T17:55:10","slug":"canadian-nuclear-industry-urges-regulator-renew-darlington-licence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2015\/11\/04\/canadian-nuclear-industry-urges-regulator-renew-darlington-licence\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Nuclear Industry Urges Regulator to Renew Darlington&nbsp;Licence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>OTTAWA<\/strong> (November 4, 2015) \u2013 The<a href=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\"> Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) <\/a>today called on the <a href=\"http:\/\/nuclearsafety.gc.ca\/eng\/\">Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission<\/a> to renew the Darlington nuclear power plant\u2019s operating licence for 13 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis period would ensure that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opg.com\/generating-power\/nuclear\/stations\/darlington-nuclear\/Pages\/darlington-nuclear.aspx\">Ontario Power Generation<\/a> had a consistent set of licence conditions throughout the Darlington refurbishment project,\u201d said CNA President and CEO Dr. John Barrett. \u201cThis consistency would allow work to proceed in the safest manner possible,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A longer licence term would still allow for safety reviews and public scrutiny of Darlington\u2019s performance before the commission, Dr. Barrett said.<\/p>\n<p>The Darlington station\u2019s four nuclear reactors provide about 20 percent of Ontario\u2019s electrical supply. They entered service between 1990 and 1993.<\/p>\n<p>OPG is about to invest $12.8 billion to replace key components, and to ensure that Darlington provides affordable, reliable electricity well into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. The project is creating several thousand jobs, and will ensure that Darlington remains a key employer.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear energy plants emit no climate-changing greenhouse gases during power generation, just like hydro dams, wind turbines and solar panels. Like hydro, but unlike solar and wind, nuclear plants generate power around the clock in any weather.<\/p>\n<p>These attributes enabled Ontario to get rid of coal-fired generation, reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, and significantly reduce respiratory illnesses and deaths caused by air pollution, Dr. Barrett said. \u201cNuclear power is Ontario\u2019s biggest source of clean energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the four reactors at Darlington, Ontario operates six reactors at its Pickering station and eight more at the Bruce station.
