Depuis 2012, la mission des rovers se poursuit gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9nergie nucl\u00e9aire.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13949\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/mars-rover-editorial-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"mars rover-editorial\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/mars-rover-editorial-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/mars-rover-editorial-768x565.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/mars-rover-editorial.jpg 808w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00ab Les versions ant\u00e9rieures du rover \u00e9taient propuls\u00e9es par l&#8217;\u00e9nergie solaire et avaient une dur\u00e9e de vie limit\u00e9e, mais le passage au nucl\u00e9aire leur a donn\u00e9 un nouveau souffle,\u00a0\u00bb de dire le Dr. Ashwin Vasavada, un scientifique chevronn\u00e9 faisant partie d&#8217;une \u00e9quipe de 500 experts qui sont les yeux et les oreilles des missions du rover sur Terre.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Avec le temps, la poussi\u00e8re s&#8217;amassait sur les panneaux solaires et il n&#8217;existe aucune fa\u00e7on de les nettoyer,\u00a0\u00bb d\u00e9clare Vasavada. \u00ab Vous ne pouvez pas apporter d&#8217;eau. C&#8217;est pourquoi nous avons d\u00fb faire appel \u00e0 une source d&#8217;alimentation plus durable et plus fiable afin de contrer ce risque.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Curiosity transporte \u00e0 son bord pr\u00e8s de cinq kilogrammes de combustible nucl\u00e9aire. La d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration du plutonium 238 produit de la chaleur et de l&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Au fur et \u00e0 mesure qu&#8217;il se d\u00e9sint\u00e8gre, il se transforme en uranium 234. Cette \u00e9volution produit une quantit\u00e9 consid\u00e9rable de chaleur, dont une partie circule \u00e0 l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur du v\u00e9hicule pour garder les instruments au chaud, alors qu&#8217;une partie est convertie en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 pour ainsi permettre au rover de fonctionner de mani\u00e8re continue.<\/p>\n<p>C&#8217;est ici qu&#8217;intervient Ryan Bechtel accompagn\u00e9 de son \u00e9quipe au Bureau responsable de l&#8217;\u00e9nergie de l&#8217;espace et de la d\u00e9fense du d\u00e9partement am\u00e9ricain de l&#8217;\u00c9nergie. En tant que gestionnaire de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des syst\u00e8mes d&#8217;\u00e9nergie pour la NASA, il est charg\u00e9 d&#8217;alimenter Curiosity en \u00e9nergie avec l&#8217;aide de ses coll\u00e8gues ing\u00e9nieurs.<\/p>\n<p>Le syst\u00e8me d&#8217;\u00e9nergie du rover repose sur un concept qui ressemble \u00e0 la technologie qu&#8217;on retrouvait sur les modules atterrisseurs Viking dans les ann\u00e9es 1970, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur thermo\u00e9lectrique \u00e0 radioisotope pour missions multiples (MMRTG). D&#8217;une hauteur de pr\u00e8s de deux pieds et d&#8217;un diam\u00e8tre d&#8217;environ deux pieds, le MMRTG permet au rover de fonctionner sans interruption. C\u2019est un fait remarquable dans un monde o\u00f9 la temp\u00e9rature chute bien en-dessous de -70 degr\u00e9s C et descend parfois jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 -100 degr\u00e9s C la nuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Ce g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur facilite grandement les op\u00e9rations, puisque vous n&#8217;avez pas \u00e0 vous inqui\u00e9ter des conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques et de la position du soleil dans le ciel en fonction de la saison ou de l&#8217;heure du jour, \u00bb de dire Bechtel.\u00a0\u00bb Il permet ainsi de charger continuellement la batterie et de recueillir davantage de donn\u00e9es scientifiques.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;innovation \u2013 en partie en provenance du Canada \u2013 se retrouve dans d&#8217;autres syst\u00e8mes du rover Curiosity, comme le spectrom\u00e8tre d&#8217;analyse de particules alpha aux rayons X (APXS). Cet instrument, qui est financ\u00e9 par l&#8217;Agence spatiale canadienne, est attach\u00e9 au bras du rover face au sol. Il d\u00e9tecte et analyse les \u00e9l\u00e9ments chimiques que renferment le roc et le sol, aidant ainsi les scientifiques \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer de mani\u00e8re plus pr\u00e9cise l&#8217;histoire de Mars et \u00e0 \u00e9tablir si cette plan\u00e8te aurait d\u00e9j\u00e0 pu entretenir la vie.<\/p>\n<p>Alors que les \u00e9quipes scientifiques examinent les donn\u00e9es recueillies par Curiosity, elles se pr\u00e9parent \u00e9galement en vue de la prochaine grande \u00e9tape dans l&#8217;exploration martienne \u2013 soit la sonde Mars 2020 qui devrait atterrir en f\u00e9vrier 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Le rover Mars 2020 proc\u00e9dera \u00e0 l&#8217;essai de nouvelle technologie qui profitera \u00e0 l&#8217;exploration future de la plan\u00e8te rouge par des robots et des humains.
