{"id":13579,"date":"2016-05-01T04:24:36","date_gmt":"2016-05-01T08:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/?post_type=news&#038;p=13579"},"modified":"2020-03-10T13:55:06","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T17:55:06","slug":"neutron-beams-airplane-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2016\/05\/01\/neutron-beams-airplane-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Neutron Beams &#038; Airplane&nbsp;Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statcan.gc.ca\/pub\/51-209-x\/2015001\/part-partie1-eng.htm\">Statistics Canada<\/a>, there were 5.4 million take-offs and landings at Canada\u2019s ninety-two airports in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cins.ca\/docs\/CINSweb_2008.pdf\">Everything is made of materials, even people<\/a><strong><u>.<\/u><\/strong> And those materials can be examined through non-destructive testing (NDT). It is exactly what it sounds like, a method to test materials without breaking or destroying them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, they\u2019d make the part bigger. That works and it works if it\u2019s on the ground, but with an airplane, when you have to move through the air you are sensitive to weight,\u201d according to Michael Gharghouri, a research scientist at CNL with a PhD in materials engineering. \u201cSo you really want to design just what you need. You can only do it if you understand the material very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to flying, NDT is an effective method that can pick up potential problems long before a plane takes off.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where <a href=\"https:\/\/nray.ca\/nray\/index.php\">Nray Services<\/a> comes in. This small company has a big job. For the last twenty years, its shop in Dundas, Ontario has been testing engine turbine blades for 95% of the entire aerospace industry using a neutron beam.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/plane.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13972\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/plane.png\" alt=\"plane\" width=\"299\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>There are four phases to jet propulsion according to Rankin MacGillivray, President of Nray<strong>: <\/strong>Suck, squeeze, bang and blow<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intake is the <strong>suck that draws air into the jet engine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then the air is <strong>squeezed<\/strong> by compression within the aircraft\u2019s engine.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>bang<\/strong> occurs when the fuel and the spark are added.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>blow<\/strong> pushes air out of the engine at the rear, and pushes the aircraft forward.<\/p>\n<p>It is these small rings of blades, approximately four or five inches high, inside the engine that Nray tests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe blades are operating at temperatures higher than their melting points<\/strong>,\u201d according to MacGillivray.<\/p>\n<p>To compensate for the high temperatures, the blades have hollow passages that allow cool air to circulate inside them. Within this ceramic core, any blockage greater than a \u00bc millimeter could prevent cooling and cause the blade to break up in flight. So accuracy matters very much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeramic is a light material compared to the blade material. It\u2019s fairly heavy and if you look at an x-ray for example it can penetrate but it can\u2019t see behind it\u201d, says MacGillivray. \u201cNeutron rays can see light materials behind heavy materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neutron beams don\u2019t just provide highly accurate measurements.
