Ce combustible est hautement radioactif, mais il ne repr\u00e9sente qu\u2019environ 3\u00a0% du volume des d\u00e9chets nucl\u00e9aires dans le monde. Les 97\u00a0% restants sont beaucoup moins radioactifs. Quoi qu\u2019il en soit, il faut g\u00e9rer tous les d\u00e9chets avec soin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Types de d\u00e9chets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On trouve trois\u00a0grands types de d\u00e9chets nucl\u00e9aires\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>D\u00e9chets de faible activit\u00e9<\/em>\u2013 Dans toutes les installations nucl\u00e9aires, on utilise des outils de nettoyage (par exemple des vadrouilles) et des v\u00eatements protecteurs. M\u00eame si ces articles n\u2019entrent pratiquement jamais en contact avec les mati\u00e8res radioactives, on les consid\u00e8re comme des d\u00e9chets nucl\u00e9aires.<\/li>\n<li><em>D\u00e9chets de moyenne activit\u00e9<\/em>\u2013 Certaines pi\u00e8ces de r\u00e9acteur, par exemple les filtres \u00e0 eau, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 irradi\u00e9es et sont devenues radioactives.<\/li>\n<li><em>D\u00e9chets de haute activit\u00e9<\/em>\u2013 Il s\u2019agit du combustible irradi\u00e9. Lorsqu\u2019on le retire du c\u0153ur du r\u00e9acteur, le combustible est tr\u00e8s chaud et encore radioactif. Sa radioactivit\u00e9 diminue lentement au fil du temps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-11755 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pickering-container-FR-v1-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"pickering-container-FR-v1\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pickering-container-FR-v1-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pickering-container-FR-v1-1024x947.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pickering-container-FR-v1.jpg 1786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stockage \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le mode de stockage des d\u00e9chets dans les installations nucl\u00e9aires canadiennes varie en fonction du danger associ\u00e9 \u00e0 chaque type de d\u00e9chets.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>La plupart des d\u00e9chets de faible activit\u00e9 ne sont pas plus dangereux que les d\u00e9chets ordinaires, mais on les place dans des installations de stockage \u00e0 long terme pour plus de s\u00fbret\u00e9.<\/li>\n<li>Les d\u00e9chets de moyenne activit\u00e9 sont stock\u00e9s dans un conteneur fait d\u2019un mat\u00e9riau qui bloque le rayonnement (par exemple du plomb). Dans le conteneur, leur radioactivit\u00e9 diminue lentement.<\/li>\n<li>Les d\u00e9chets de haute activit\u00e9 sont immerg\u00e9s dans une piscine remplie d\u2019eau, o\u00f9 ils refroidissent pendant une p\u00e9riode de cinq\u00a0\u00e0 dix\u00a0ans. On les place ensuite dans un conteneur de stockage sp\u00e9cial \u00e0 paroi \u00e9paisse en b\u00e9ton et en acier. Leur radioactivit\u00e9 diminue au fil du temps, mais le combustible restera trop radioactif pour que la population ou l\u2019environnement puissent y \u00eatre expos\u00e9s directement sans danger pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stockage dans l\u2019avenir<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le stockage des d\u00e9chets nucl\u00e9aires en surface sur le site des installations nucl\u00e9aires est s\u00e9curitaire, mais il n\u00e9cessite une surveillance et des mesures de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 continues. Une autre fa\u00e7on s\u00e9curitaire de stocker les d\u00e9chets nucl\u00e9aires consiste \u00e0 les enfouir dans une roche s\u00e8che \u00e0 l\u2019abri des tremblements de terre.<\/p>\n<p>Une commission d\u2019examen mise sur pied par le gouvernement f\u00e9d\u00e9ral lui a recommand\u00e9 d\u2019approuver un plan pr\u00e9voyant l\u2019enfouissement des d\u00e9chets de faible et de moyenne activit\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de Kincardine, en Ontario. De plus, le gouvernement a approuv\u00e9 un plan de l\u2019industrie nucl\u00e9aire visant \u00e0 trouver un emplacement pour le stockage du combustible irradi\u00e9.
