{"id":11048,"date":"2015-04-15T09:00:57","date_gmt":"2015-04-15T13:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cna.ca\/?post_type=news&#038;p=11048"},"modified":"2020-03-10T13:55:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-10T17:55:26","slug":"cameco-india-agreement-a-breakthrough-cna-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cna.ca\/fr\/2015\/04\/15\/cameco-india-agreement-a-breakthrough-cna-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Cameco-India Agreement a Breakthrough, CNA&nbsp;Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>OTTAWA (April 15, 2015) \u2013 <\/strong>The Canadian nuclear industry today applauded Cameco\u2019s breakthrough agreement to supply uranium to India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement speaks to India\u2019s tremendous progress in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes,\u201d said Dr. John Barrett, President and CEO of the <a href=\"Canadian%20Nuclear Association\">Canadian Nuclear Association<\/a>. \u201cCanadian nuclear suppliers face excellent opportunities, as Cameco has just illustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Barrett also noted the supportive roles played by the federal and Saskatchewan governments. Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed a Nuclear Cooperation Agreement with India in 2010, and put the agreement into effect in 2013. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall led trade missions to India in 2011 and 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese initiatives opened the door for Canadian nuclear expertise,\u201d Dr. Barrett said. \u201cThat means more jobs for Canadians and a cleaner energy future for India.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 1990, India\u2019s electrical output has tripled. Last year, nuclear energy provided 3.5 percent of India\u2019s electricity, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Indian government has indicated that nuclear energy will provide 25 percent of electrical supply by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>India operates 21 nuclear reactors, including two CANDUs and 16 reactors based on heavy-water technology.
