Plus le vaisseau spatial est lourd, plus il faut de combustible et plus la mission est co\u00fbteuse. Les sources d\u2019\u00e9nergie n\u00e9cessaires pour effectuer un travail dans l\u2019espace ou sur une autre plan\u00e8te doivent \u00e9galement \u00eatre mises en orbite et n\u00e9cessitent la combustion d\u2019une plus grande quantit\u00e9 de combustible et plus de d\u00e9penses. Le manque d\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne pour br\u00fbler des combustibles, tels que l\u2019essence, rend la plupart des combustibles chimiques non viables dans l\u2019espace. Apr\u00e8s leur lancement, la plupart des missions spatiales sont aliment\u00e9es par les technologies nucl\u00e9aires et solaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Mars-Curiosity-rover-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21689\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Mars-Curiosity-rover-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Mars-Curiosity-rover-1024x648.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Mars-Curiosity-rover.jpg 1722w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Depuis son atterrissage sur Mars en 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/\">l\u2019astromobile Mars Curiosity<\/a> a utilis\u00e9 un g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur thermo\u00e9lectrique au plutonium d\u2019une puissance de 125\u00a0watts pour alimenter son exploration de la surface. Ce plutonium \u00e9tait presque 1000\u00a0fois plus l\u00e9ger que l\u2019essence \u00e0 transporter pour effectuer le m\u00eame travail. Certains astromobiles martiens sont aliment\u00e9s par le soleil, d\u2019autres par le nucl\u00e9aire. Alors que les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents astromobiles d\u2019exploration de Mars \u00e9taient aliment\u00e9s par le soleil, panneaux solaires ne produisaient qu\u2019un cinqui\u00e8me de la puissance de ceux du Curiosity. Cet astromobile nucl\u00e9aire continue d\u2019explorer la plan\u00e8te rocheuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ce ne sont pas les premi\u00e8res technologies nucl\u00e9aires \u00e0 alimenter des v\u00e9hicules. De petits moteurs nucl\u00e9aires alimentent les sous-marins depuis de lancement, en 1955, de l\u2019USS <em>Nautilus<\/em> \u00e9quip\u00e9 d\u2019un moteur de 10&nbsp;m\u00e9gawatts. Cette avanc\u00e9e technologique a consid\u00e9rablement augment\u00e9 la port\u00e9e des sous-marins entre deux rechargements et a permis aux sous-marins d\u2019\u00eatre compl\u00e8tement immerg\u00e9s pendant des p\u00e9riodes beaucoup plus longues. Ces diff\u00e9rences ont chang\u00e9 la dynamique de la guerre froide. L\u2019utilisation militaire de la technologie nucl\u00e9aire a finalement donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 des usages \u00e0 des fins pacifiques, dans la mesure o\u00f9 la Russie utilise aujourd\u2019hui des brise-glaces nucl\u00e9aires pour ouvrir des voies de navigation dans l\u2019oc\u00e9an Arctique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les r\u00e9acteurs sous-marins sont compacts, ils sont produits dans des usines plut\u00f4t que sur place, et ils sont capables de modifier la production.
