L\u2019appareil se compose d\u2019une source radioactive et d\u2019un d\u00e9tecteur permettant de mesurer le rayonnement qui interagit avec l\u2019objet mesur\u00e9. Lorsqu\u2019un objet est plac\u00e9 entre la source et le d\u00e9tecteur, la diff\u00e9rence de rayonnement capt\u00e9e par le d\u00e9tecteur peut fournir des informations utiles sur l\u2019objet, telles que son \u00e9paisseur, sa densit\u00e9 ou sa composition chimique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il existe deux principaux types de jauges nucl\u00e9aires&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Les jauges fixes sont mises en place en permanence pour analyser un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 industriel. Elles peuvent, par exemple, donner une lecture continue du niveau de remplissage d\u2019un pipeline, de la densit\u00e9 des mat\u00e9riaux qui le traversent ou de l\u2019\u00e9paisseur des produits sur une bande transporteuse.<\/li><li>Les jauges nucl\u00e9aires portatives peuvent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es pour analyser les parois de trous creus\u00e9s dans le sol, afin d\u2019identifier des gisements min\u00e9raux, ou de rechercher des grottes souterraines ou d\u2019autres formations susceptibles de rendre un site de construction instable.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Ground-Integrity-and-Deep-Soil-Gauges-FR.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22214\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Les entreprises qui utilisent des jauges nucl\u00e9aires au Canada re\u00e7oivent des permis d\u2019exploitation d\u00e9livr\u00e9es par la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca\/fra\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Commission canadienne de s\u00fbret\u00e9 nucl\u00e9aire<\/a>, qui fixe des r\u00e8gles strictes en mati\u00e8re de sant\u00e9 et de s\u00fbret\u00e9. Les travailleurs sont surveill\u00e9s pour d\u00e9celer toute exposition aux rayonnements par ces appareils et sont syst\u00e9matiquement consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme les utilisateurs de sources professionnelles de rayonnement les moins expos\u00e9s au Canada, recevant des doses de rayonnement suppl\u00e9mentaires bien inf\u00e9rieures aux niveaux moyens de rayonnement naturel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essais non destructifs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Comment conna\u00eetre le degr\u00e9 de force de la glace sur un lac gel\u00e9? C\u2019est facile, si vous \u00eates pr\u00eat \u00e0 la briser. C\u2019est le probl\u00e8me auquel de nombreuses industries font face&nbsp;: la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de tester ou d\u2019analyser les produits et les \u00e9quipements sans les endommager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il existe diff\u00e9rentes m\u00e9thodes d\u2019essais non destructifs (END). Deux des plus r\u00e9pandues font appel au rayonnement et \u00e0 des substances nucl\u00e9aires&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>La <strong>radiographie industrielle<\/strong> est un moyen portatif de v\u00e9rifier la qualit\u00e9 des soudures pendant la construction et l\u2019inspection des pipelines, de cuves sous pression et d\u2019importants \u00e9l\u00e9ments structurels. Elle est \u00e9galement employ\u00e9e pour d\u00e9terminer l\u2019emplacement de mat\u00e9riaux noy\u00e9s dans d\u2019autres, comme par exemple un conduit d\u2019eau ou d\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 traversant du b\u00e9ton. Cette m\u00e9thode utilise une cam\u00e9ra radiographique. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un appareil fortement blind\u00e9 qui, au lieu de la lumi\u00e8re, utilise le rayonnement d\u2019un \u00e9metteur gamma tel que le cobalt&nbsp;60 ou l\u2019iridium&nbsp;192. L\u2019image peut \u00eatre analys\u00e9e pour \u00e9valuer la qualit\u00e9 d\u2019une soudure et d\u00e9terminer si l\u2019objet peut \u00eatre utilis\u00e9 sans danger.<\/li><li>La <strong>neutronographie<\/strong> fait appel \u00e0 une source de rayonnement neutronique plut\u00f4t qu\u2019\u00e0 un \u00e9metteur gamma. Il existe des sources portatives de neutrons, mais la neutronographie est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement effectu\u00e9e dans des r\u00e9acteurs nucl\u00e9aires de recherche, tels que le <a href=\"https:\/\/nuclear.mcmaster.ca\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">r\u00e9acteur nucl\u00e9aire McMaster<\/a> \u00e0 Hamilton, en Ontario.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Les neutrons interagissent mieux que les rayons gamma avec les mati\u00e8res organiques et l\u2019eau; la neutronographie est donc une m\u00e9thode plus efficace pour d\u00e9tecter les dommages attribuables \u00e0 la corrosion ou \u00e0 l\u2019humidit\u00e9.
