Leur principe de fonctionnement consiste \u00e0 placer un \u00e9metteur alpha, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement de l\u2019am\u00e9ricium\u00a0241, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 d\u2019un d\u00e9tecteur d\u2019ions. Les particules alpha cr\u00e9ent l\u2019ionisation des mol\u00e9cules d\u2019air, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019elles s\u00e9parent un \u00e9lectron du reste de la mol\u00e9cule, si bien que les deux fragments qui en r\u00e9sultent portent une charge \u00e9lectrique. La charge \u00e9lectrique est d\u00e9tectable par l\u2019appareil et, s\u2019il y a suffisamment de fum\u00e9e dans l\u2019air, la charge baisse et le d\u00e9tecteur \u00e9met une alerte. Cette conception des d\u00e9tecteurs de fum\u00e9e leur permet de fonctionner pendant une longue p\u00e9riode, car l\u2019am\u00e9ricium\u00a0241 a une demi-vie de 458\u00a0ans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Smoke-Detector-FR.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22222\" width=\"300\" height=\"89\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Les panneaux de sortie de secours aident \u00e0 illuminer les corridors sombres en cas de panne de courant pour aider les gens \u00e0 se mettre en s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Ces panneaux ne sont pas aliment\u00e9s par une source d\u2019urgence, car ils doivent fonctionner m\u00eame en cas de perte de l\u2019alimentation de secours. Au lieu de cela, ils sont aliment\u00e9s par le tritium, isotope radioactif de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne. Le tritium lib\u00e8re des particules b\u00eata qui produisent une lumi\u00e8re fluorescente lorsqu\u2019elles interagissent avec les phosphores contenus dans le panneau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019autres articles domestiques courants peuvent aussi pr\u00e9senter une radioactivit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat de trace. Par exemple, on trouve un plan de travail en granit dans de nombreuses habitations canadiennes.
