Les r\u00e9acteurs CANDU en Ontario produisent du cobalt&nbsp;60, qui constitue la principale source de rayonnement pour la conservation des aliments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En plus de rendre les aliments plus s\u00fbrs en tuant les organismes porteurs de maladies, l\u2019irradiation des aliments prolonge leur dur\u00e9e de conservation, car elle d\u00e9truit les microbes qui provoquent leur d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration. Elle ralentit \u00e9galement les processus de maturation et de germination des l\u00e9gumes-racines. Par ailleurs, elle permet de commercialiser des produits \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle internationale et de s\u2019assurer que les insectes ne soient pas transport\u00e9s au-del\u00e0 des fronti\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019irradiation des aliments, \u00e9galement connue sous le nom de pasteurisation \u00e0 froid, ne les rend pas radioactifs. Les rayonnements tuent les parasites et les ravageurs, tout en gardant les aliments irradi\u00e9s propres \u00e0 la consommation. L\u2019Organisation mondiale de la Sant\u00e9, l\u2019Organisation des Nations Unies pour l\u2019alimentation et l\u2019agriculture et l\u2019Agence internationale de l\u2019\u00e9nergie atomique ont examin\u00e9 les donn\u00e9es accumul\u00e9es pendant environ 50&nbsp;ans de recherche. Elles ont constat\u00e9 que les aliments irradi\u00e9s sont aussi s\u00fbrs que les aliments conserv\u00e9s au moyen d\u2019autres techniques, telles que la cong\u00e9lation ou la mise en conserve, et que leur valeur nutritive est similaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, plus de 55&nbsp;pays ont approuv\u00e9 l\u2019irradiation des aliments comme un moyen fiable d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la dur\u00e9e de conservation des aliments. L\u2019un des chefs de file mondiaux dans le domaine, Nordion (Canada) Inc., a construit de nombreuses installations d\u2019irradiation des aliments dans le monde entier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"858\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Soybean-farm.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Soybean-farm.jpg 858w, https:\/\/cna.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Soybean-farm-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications agricoles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Au fil des ans, les chercheurs agricoles ont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 de nombreuses applications pour l\u2019irradiation. Plus particuli\u00e8rement, l\u2019irradiation des cultures&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>am\u00e9liore la valeur nutritive de certaines cultures,<\/li><li>am\u00e9liore les qualit\u00e9s de cuisson ou de fonte, ou r\u00e9duit le temps de cuisson de certains aliments.<\/li><li>montre comment les plantes absorbent les nutriments, aidant ainsi les chercheurs \u00e0 savoir quand appliquer des engrais et en quelle quantit\u00e9.<\/li><li>st\u00e9rilise les \u0153ufs ou les m\u00e2les des esp\u00e8ces d\u2019insectes nuisibles, afin d\u2019arr\u00eater la reproduction, ce qui permet de contr\u00f4ler efficacement la population.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019irradiation des cultures s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e \u00eatre efficace, s\u00fbre et respectueuse de l\u2019environnement. Elle ne lib\u00e8re aucun agent chimique, biologique ou radioactif dans l\u2019environnement. Elle a permis aux agriculteurs de limiter l\u2019utilisation d\u2019engrais, ce qui contribue \u00e0 pr\u00e9server les r\u00e9serves d\u2019eau, \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les co\u00fbts \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques li\u00e9s au pompage et \u00e0 emp\u00eacher que des contaminants potentiels se retrouvent dans les ruisseaux et les rivi\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019Agence internationale de l\u2019\u00e9nergie atomique (AIEA) estime qu\u2019en supprimant les populations d\u2019insectes nuisibles gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la technique de l\u2019insecte st\u00e9rile, l\u2019utilisation de pesticides dans le monde a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duite de 600&nbsp;000&nbsp;litres par an. Depuis 2006, le programme de lutte contre les insectes nuisibles a g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 des b\u00e9n\u00e9fices pour les agriculteurs de plus de 100&nbsp;millions de dollars et a permis de cr\u00e9er des milliers d\u2019emplois ruraux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La <a href=\"http:\/\/www-naweb.iaea.org\/nafa\/Pbg\/\">Section de la s\u00e9lection des plantes et de la phytog\u00e9n\u00e9tique<\/a> de l\u2019AIEA utilise \u00e9galement l\u2019irradiation pour d\u00e9velopper des centaines de vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de cultures plus r\u00e9sistantes aux maladies, notamment les arachides, les tomates, les oignons, le riz, le soja et l\u2019orge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutrition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La technologie nucl\u00e9aire a des r\u00e9percussions profondes sur notre alimentation et sur notre agriculture, car elle permet d\u2019am\u00e9liorer les vari\u00e9t\u00e9s de cultures, de prolonger la dur\u00e9e de conservation et de d\u00e9truire les ravageurs et les parasites. Cela rend notre alimentation plus saine et plus app\u00e9tissante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En outre, la technologie nucl\u00e9aire contribue \u00e0 la lutte contre deux fl\u00e9aux li\u00e9s \u00e0 la nutrition&nbsp;: la malnutrition et l\u2019ob\u00e9sit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Malgr\u00e9 la r\u00e9volution agricole du XX<sup>\u00e8me<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle, la <strong>malnutrition<\/strong> continue de toucher de nombreuses personnes. Selon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/fr\">l\u2019Organisation mondiale de la Sant\u00e9<\/a> (OMS), pr\u00e8s de 482&nbsp;millions d\u2019adultes pr\u00e9sentent une insuffisance pond\u00e9rale, tandis que la malnutrition est la cause d\u2019environ 45&nbsp;% de d\u00e9c\u00e8s chez les enfants de moins de cinq ans, principalement dans les pays en d\u00e9veloppement. Mais la malnutrition peut aussi \u00eatre cach\u00e9e. M\u00eame lorsque la nourriture est abondante, il arrive que les gens ne consomment pas assez une vitamine ou un min\u00e9ral en particulier.<\/li><li>L\u2019<strong>ob\u00e9sit\u00e9<\/strong> est le fl\u00e9au inverse, mais est tout aussi grave. L\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/fr\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/obesity-and-overweight\">OMS<\/a> estime que l\u2019ob\u00e9sit\u00e9 a tripl\u00e9 depuis 1975, avec pr\u00e8s de deux&nbsp;milliards d\u2019adultes en surpoids, dont 650&nbsp;millions sont ob\u00e8ses. Outre la stigmatisation sociale, ces personnes sont expos\u00e9es \u00e0 des risques \u00e9lev\u00e9s de maladies cardiaques, d\u2019accidents vasculaires c\u00e9r\u00e9braux, de diab\u00e8te et de certains cancers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans les deux cas, une lecture pr\u00e9cise de la composition corporelle est essentielle. Une technique appel\u00e9e dilution de deut\u00e9rium permet de d\u00e9terminer le pourcentage de masse grasse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2082845\/\">par rapport \u00e0 la masse maigre.<\/a> Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cette technique, le patient boit de l\u2019eau contenant du deut\u00e9rium. Cette eau peut \u00eatre retrouv\u00e9e dans les fluides corporels, ce qui, selon les scientifiques, permet de donner une lecture plus pr\u00e9cise de l\u2019indice de masse corporelle comparativement aux m\u00e9thodes conventionnelles.
